Baird undersocks

Around 1916, John Logie Baird decided to sell socks prepared with borax to help overcome the problem of wet and cold feet. Pictured here are a pair of the original socks, resting on Undersock advertising literature.

The information states that the socks were a "specially medicated soft absorbent sheath worn next to the skin under the ordinary sock" and includes testimonials from soldiers serving at the front.

Through innovative promotion, such as using women with sandwich boards to adverise them for "The Soldier's Foot", Baird sold sufficient socks to leave Scotland for the sunnier climes of Trinidad!

John Logie Baird was, of course, the first person to demonstrate television, in Soho, London on January 26th, 1926.
