Photograph of Captain David Gray's family, 1888.

Captain David Gray's large family was typical of that of a successful Victorian gentleman. His first marriage, to Isabella Gamack Law, produced 4 children. This photograph shows the 11 children of David and his second wife Amelia Walker. It was taken in 1888 at the family home, The Links, overlooking Peterhead Bay.

Captain David Gray's children

Robert, William, Alice, Lily, Violet (Vitie)
Maragret (Peggie), Jimmie, Francis, David, Doris, Jean

Robert (back row, left) sailed with his father as First Officer before becoming a doctor. His twin brother William became a tea planter in Assam.

James (front second left) became harbour master at Colombo and David (fourth from left) emigrated to the USA.

Peggy (front first left) died tragically a year after this photograph was taken, at the age of five.

The fact that this family portrait was taken in 1888 suggests that it may have be photographed by Walter Livingstone-Learmonth, an Australian photographer who voyaged with Gray to the arctic that year.
