Polar bears were popular animals for display in meageries and zoos. In fact they were extremely difficult animals to keep snae and healthy. Large carnivores, used to moving great distances over ice, polar bears usually became neurotic when kept in the barren and unstimulating environment of a concrete pen. Few zoos now keep polar bears.
