Royal Arms of Scotland, book illustration, 1535

The Royal Arms of Scotland from the Cartulary or book of charters and properties of the Abbey of Cambuskenneth. The Cartulary was compiled in 1535 by Abbot Alexander Mylne at the command of King James V, so that Cambuskenneth's properties would be clearly listed, and the Arms are therefore on the opening page of the book.

Lion rampant on shield or with double tressure, supported by a single unicorn collared and chained in recumbent position, having the national achievement resting on his back. This is the earliest example of the unicorn supporting the arms in this way. Shield surmounted by regal crown environed by gold collar of thistles. Medallion of St Andrew depends from collar at side of unicorn.

The Cambuskenneth Cartulary was printed by The Grampian Club in 1872, and the illustration is taken from this book.
