Toddy ladle of whalebone and silver, by William Jamieson, Aberdeen, c. 1810

Toddy ladle of silver round bowl with reeded rim and spiralled dark whalebone shaft topped with silver finial. (Toddy is a beverage composed of whisky or other spirituous liquor with hot water and sugar.)

William Jamieson was admitted to the Incorporation of Hammermen in 1806 and set up a successful business. He was a shrewd businessman and side stepped the craft restriction enforced by the Hammermen by employing a trained watchmaker to look after the watchmaking and repairs on his premises. This enabled him to expand the business. He was also the most prolific goldsmith of the early 19th century. The firm which he established still trades today as Jamieson & Carry in Aberdeen's Union Street.
