Propaganda Persuades

Propaganda films have all but disappeared, but propaganda still exists within the moving image, primarily with the manipulation of news footage, such as the recent broadcast images of Saddam Hussain's use of chemical weapons on his own people. The images are old, but the cause is new and people must be persuaded.

Social documenatary and propaganda are linked. They both record 'real' events and real people, but their uses are different. Social documentary records an event and poses questions to the audience, allowing them to form an opinion. Propaganda aims to force and manipulate the audience, usually with a dominant force behind it.
