While men engaged in business in the
street, in offices or in coffee houses, or attended public or sporting
events, women were increasingly expected to stay at home. Within the
home, however, women were in control and made decisions on matters such
as entertainment and furnishings. New houses were developed with privacy
in mind, being discrete units, with walled gardens. Inside them rooms
developed specific purposes, with a dining room, and a parlour or drawing
room, where women could preside over the entertainment of family and
friends.
