Hillwakers
and mountaineers regularly used the White Lady chairlift (which was
replaced by the funicular) to reach the summit of Cairn Gorm, which
would allow access to other mountains within the range. This is not
possible using the funicular- as non-skiing visitors cannot access
the mountain from the Ptarmigan - so walkers and climbers have to
begin their ascent from the Coire Cas car park.
Despite
many environmentalists having grave reservations about the funicular,
the railway still has many supporters.
