The facilities were desperately needing upgrading and in 1993 the idea of a funicular railway was put forward. The funicular railway was seen to be a safer and altogether more modern alternative to the existing chairlift which had been in existence since 1961 and was becoming increasingly obsolete.

Another major advantage of the funicular was that it would increase the number of summer visitors to the Cairngorms, thus extending the tourism season and developing the area as a year round destination. Obviously the funicular railway would be of great economic importance to the area and at the HIE we were fully committed to the project. As you saw however, in session 2, things didn't run smoothly, but eventually the plan was given the go-ahead and the funicular railway was built.

This type of chairlift cannot operate in windy conditions consequently many skiing days in an already short season were lost.
