[1141] Hydro-Electric Context

Thumbnail for project: Hydro-Electric ContextScotland's hydro-electric schemes are a modern marvel. Initiated by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board under the leadership of Tom Johnston and built largely during the 1940s and 1950s, the schemes were welcomed by many for whom the development brought electricity to rural areas for the first time. However, many also opposed the schemes for despoiling the landscape. Eight major schemes are documented in full on Scran and this collection of images provides context by highlighting the people, places and equipment that make hydro-electrics possible.   This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.
