Men from across the Roman Empire made up the Roman Army – women were not allowed. The people who were in the army were professional soldiers and their job was to fight for, extend and protect the Roman Empire. After the 1st Century B.C. any man could join the army. Soldiers had to stay for at least 25 years and could not get married until they had left the army.
