[1171] The Recordings of Duncan Macrae

Thumbnail for project: The Recordings of Duncan Macrae

Duncan Macrae was a beloved comic actor, who appeared in numerous plays and in many films, including Casino Royale and Whisky Galore, as well as in TV programmes including Para Handy- Master Mariner, The Avengers and The Prisoner.  Born in Glasgow in 1905, he was an early member of the Citizens' Theatre in Glasgow (alongside Stanley Baxter). He became a mainstay of television Hogmanay celebrations in the 1950s and 1960s with a rendition of his song (in Glaswegian scots) "The Wee Cock Sparra". He died in 1967.

In addition to his acting career, he recorded several albums and singles, all of which are now out of print, and mostly for small Scottish record labels, now defunct. His daughter Christine has digitised these recordings and has kindly shared them with Scran users. All efforts have been made to contact the original copyright-holders.
