Agents of Change

These types of films were used extensively both pre and post World War 2 to instigate change. The middle classes were maybe still the ones with access to the technology, with the ability to record images such as these, but it was the working classes that would put them to use and force change.

The social problem documentary created a new breed of film maker looking to have a social point to the films that were made. The images used here have an entertainment value in themselves, but social documentarists demand that you look beyond this, that you confront the images and react, through instigating change, to what you see.
