Therefore, when a tourism development is proposed, it is in everyone's interests to maximise the benefits whilst minimising the negative effects. This is easy in theory but much more difficult to achieve in practice. You'll find this as you read through the chapters - it's easy to highlight the benefits that the proposed fictional mountain railway extension will bring - but is it possible to minimise, or even better to remove the negative effects? As we said earlier, it is our aim to help you understand these impacts which will appear in many different guises throughout the following chapters. You will no doubt come to the conclusion, very quickly, that there are no definitive answers.You would be right - there aren't! As long as you remember to back up your argument, your opinion has the same validity as everyone else's. So, start brushing up on your debating skills - you're going to need them! |
