Session
4 is Susan, Chief Executive for Highlands and Islands Executive. Susan
is in favour of the development going ahead as she feels it would
create jobs in the local area. It would also increase the number of
skiers using the slopes, bringing more money into the area. The Highlands
and Islands Executive were heavily involved in the original mountain
railway - it was partly funded by them - and Susan would be keen to
see the extension going ahead.
Session
5 introduces us to Bob, the representative from the Mountaineering
Club of Scotland. Bob is wholly opposed to the project. He claims
that the Cairngorms will be permanently damaged if this development
goes ahead. According to him, the plateau is incredibly fragile
and the ecology is unique. If large numbers of ill equipped and
inexperienced people are wandering around the plateau, the dangers
are obvious. He couldn't believe the original mountain railway went
ahead, but he's absolutely determined this one won't!

The
developer versus the environmentalist is an argument you will encounter
many times on this course.
