Session
3 is Jackie, manager of the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Aviemore
- the town at the foot of the Cairngorms. According to Jackie, the
number of visitors to the area has increased significantly since the
opening of the mountain railway, so an extension can only be a good
thing. In fact, predictions are that this year, summer visitors are
set to increase from the present 50,000 to 165,000 - surely that's
a great thing for the local area? She knows that many environmentalists
are unhappy at the proposed extension, but skiing provides a major
source of both direct and indirect employment in Badenoch and Strathspey.
There's a lot of competition out there and the mountain railway is
providing an improved service, which is essential to maintain Cairngorm's
position as a high quality skiing destination. On top of this it's
providing a major summer visitor attraction. It's great to have these
extra visitors - there's nothing better than meeting people of different
cultures and finding out all about them - it's definitely the best
part of Jackie's job! |
