The
RSPB felt the resultant Visitor Management Plan (VMP) - designed to
prevent such damage - would be unlikely to work in the long term and
environmental damage will result. They also claimed that if the VMP
was implemented properly then the development would become economically
unviable. Thus, the VMP would have to be abandoned - with the consequent
environmental damage - or the project would not be able to fulfill
the promised economic benefits.
Both
the RSPB and WWF were so opposed to the scheme, and concerned at
the impacts it's developments would have on the environment, that
they launched a legal battle - in the form of a judicial review
- against the development, claiming it was inappropriate in such
a sensitive location and a poor use of public funds.
