The
Cairngorms plateau - the largest area of ground over 3,000 feet in
Britain- is notorious for blizzards, gales and other severe weather-
no wonder it's known as Arctic Britain! Yet, as a result of these
extreme climate conditions, the area is home to a range of bird species
such as the Ptarmigan, Snow Bunting and Dotterel and is the most important
area for mountain wildlife in the British Isles - in fact, it's the
most important area for arctic-like wildlife in the European Community
(EC).
That's
why the Conserve the Cairngorm Campaign have always fully supported
the battle fought by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
(RSPB) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) against the funicular
going ahead.
Since
the idea of a funicular was first mooted, RSPB were violently opposed
to the scheme. They firmly believed that the development of the
funicular had the potential to significantly increase the existing
damage on the Cairngorm plateau.
