Hi
there, my name is Jane and I am a planner for Highland Council. I
have the very unenviable task of trying to decide whether the proposed
funicular extension should go ahead or not.
I
have to consider the competing - and often conflicting demands -
to make sure the land is used and developed in everyone's long-term
interest. You see, constructing new developments - such as the funicular
extension - are often essential to help the economy grow. Yet I
am aware that the nature, quality and location of these new developments
are important. Poorly- designed developments in unsuitable places
can damage the environment and it is not easy - often impossible
- to put mistakes right.
I
also have to protect the things that make local areas attractive
and special assets such as the countryside. It's also important
to encourage development which avoids harming the long-term needs
of people, the economy or the environment - in other words, sustainable
development.
