Background
to skiing in the Cairngorms
It's now been over 40 years since skiing began at Cairn Gorm, one
of only five Scottish peaks above 4,000 feet in height. Skiing was
to transform the economy and prosperity of the area for ever.
Original
enthusiasts would endure a 2-hour climb from Glenmore - at the foot
of Cairn Gorm to use the 2 tow ropes operated by a local entrepreneur.
The 1960-61 season saw the opening of the ski road from Glenmore
and the Coire Cas car park. This brought thousands to a mountain
completely unprepared for their arrival and a public appeal for
funding was launched to raise money for a proper chairlift.
