This
public appeal received a huge boost when HRH Duke of Edinburgh demanded
to see what all the fuss was about during an official tour of the
Highlands. The national press turned out in droves and thanks to the
media coverage generated, funds were secured for the new White Lady
chairlift which was opened - at a cost of £42,000 - on 23rd December
1961.
Other
ski tows and chairlifts followed, with skiing expanding into Coire
Cas and then Coire na Ciste. The towns and villages of Badenoch
and Strathspey were transformed - although not always successfully
- to cater for their skiing visitors. Hotels, guest houses, shops,
bars and restaurants flourished as the Aviemore of the 1960s became
the premier resort for winter sports in Scotland.
