2. The Cairngorms

The 1970s saw additional expansion into Coire na Ciste, ski clubs sprung up all over the country and a new generation of skiers came into the sport through a national schools programme. The 1970s were prosperous years and villages in the area further expanded.

Into the 1980s and despite proposals for expansion into Lurcher's Gully being refused, skiing continued to flourish. The Strathspey area buzzed with après-ski activity and pubs and hotels expanded in size and number - the good times kept on rolling!

Times change. The 1990s saw the development of the Nevis ski range and the continued expansion in Glenshee. There was a growing realisation that things had to change at Cairn Gorm. Some of the local villages were in need of refurbishment, the 30 year old chairlifts were starting to look their age and European ski resorts were becoming more accessible, less expensive and offered better snow cover.

By the 1990s many of the local villages were in need of modernisation.
