The point I would like to make, however, is that tourism in the area- ski tourism in particular - was in decline. Year on year winter visitor numbers were falling and we had problems with seasonality. Our tourist season was very short and due to the falling numbers, investment in the area was also reduced. It really was becoming a vicious circle - the more visitor numbers fell, the less money was invested - the less money that was invested - the more visitor numbers fell. What was desperately needed was a catalyst - something that would halt what was seen by many as the terminal decline of the industry.

Obviously that catalyst was the funicular railway. Since it opened in December 2001, we have seen an increase in visitor numbers - which has continued throughout the year.

The greater the number of visitors, the more investment is attracted to the area - the more investment attracted, the greater the visitor numbers and so on and so on.The funicular has caught the imagination of visitors both from this country and overseas and has been a great success. So, as far as I'm concerned - roll on the funicular extension!
