Firstly, why does HIE exist and how does it function? Well, HIE was established as a development agency, primarily to help encourage job creation and economic development in the Highlands and Islands area. HIE is based in Inverness and it provides the strategic background to the local enterprise companies (LECS). In terms of tourism development, the key strategic objectives of HIE can be summarised as attempting to generate business in the key sectors of the economy (of which tourism is one) whilst ensuring that economic growth is compatible with the unique environment of the area. However, overall, the tourism sector is extremely diverse and offers a wide selection of businesses that cater specifically for tourists, ranging from accommodation, to catering, to recreational activities. There are also a wide range of businesses in the area who service the tourism sector. |
