What's
all this about bringing much needed jobs to the area? Highlands and
Islands (HIE) made an extraordinary claim that the funicular would
underpin 2,500 jobs - yet there is absolutely no evidence to back
this up. In fact, in our view, 2,500 jobs in the Cairngorm area have
now been undermined as a result of local visitor attractions having
to compete with the funicular and things are set to get worse if this
extension goes ahead.
The
cost of creating these jobs on the funicular has been enormous.
Over £12 million of public investment has created 100 jobs - £120,000
per job - surely that doesn't make economic sense? Despite all of
this our main objection is on environmental grounds. It is completely
inappropriate to site a major tourist attraction on the side of
such an important mountain. Just have a look at these photos - isn't
it beautiful?
