What
people have to be aware of is that the ski area is a recreational
resource of national importance and plays a significant role in providing
employment and supporting the local economy.
In the 1999/2000 season Cairngorm accounted for 1/3 of total skier
days in Scotland, 98,600 in total, yet the ski facilities were becoming
obsolete. The funicular was intended as a replacement that would
help to ensure the future success of the Scottish ski industry.
I
am aware that there are opponents to the scheme, but the development
has passed the most rigorous of planning requirements and the building
work was subject to the most rigorous environmental audit.

Many
of the businesses in the area rely on tourism to some extent or
another.
