The Standing
Stone of Machrie Moor 3 (also available as a QuickTime VR panorama)
This beautiful tall stone is the only one still standing
of one of the several stone circles of the important prehistoric
ceremonial site of Machrie Moor (Arran).
The egg-shaped circle, about 15.5 m in diameter, was once formed
by nine sandstone slabs. Now only three stumps of them and this
impressive 4.3 m tall stone are visible.
During excavation in 1861, two cists were found within the circle:
one with fragments of burnt bone and the other with a crouched burial
of a 22 year old man. Both cists also contained flint flakes.
