Stone Circle at Machrie Moor, Arran
A group of granite boulders form the stone circle named 'Fingal's
Cauldron Seat'
Machrie Moor, in Arran, is outstanding for the quality of the prehistoric
remains which still survive there. Amongst the monuments which have
so far been identified there are a number of prehistoric stone circles
and standing stones.
This photograph shows one of the stone circles which forms this
outstanding group of prehistoric ritual monuments. It consists of
two concentric circles of granite boulders. Beyond it lies another
monument of similar date: an upright slab of red sandstone.
The stone circle featured in this photograph is popularly known
as 'Fingal's Cauldron Seat'. It was excavated in 1861 and the remains
of a stone-lined grave pit, or 'cist', discovered in the centre
of the site.
