Portable
cup-marked stone with four cup marks
This stone was found amongst the jumbled fallen stones
from the outer wall of "The Doon Fort", Drumadoon, Blackwaterfoot.
The purpose of cup-marked stones is still debated although a portable
stone like this may have been used for crushing earth or vegetable
pigments or other similar uses as in small mortars.
The Fort is believed to be Iron Age but the stone is earlier and
may have been incorporated in the wall during construction.
