Quartz porphyry

View from south of the prominent headland formed by relatively resistant Drumadoon Sill,a volcanic intrusion, south-west Arran, Buteshire


The rock can be easily examined in boulders on the foreshore - the large crystals (phenocrysts) of quartz and feldspar are visible within a much more fine-grained groundmass. See this image.
