All
the Choral Waters Sang
(Painting
by famous Scottish artist)
There are numerous seascapes by McTaggart to be found in the Orchar
Collection. The title of this painting is derived from the fourth
verse of the poem "At a Month's End" by Swinburne, published
in 1878.
In his later years McTaggart came to use figures less and less in
his paintings, preferring simply to concentrate on the power and
beauty of nature. Swirling brushstrokes and streaks of colour combine
to create an immense amount of natural movement.
Despite its size, this picture was painted on the beach at Machrihanish,
on the west coast of Scotland, during the summer of 1902. He frequently
visited there from 1876 until 1908 and was inspired by the wide
expanse of the bay and Atlantic sea.
