Permian
sandstone from Corrie, showing fossil imprint of the giant tree
fern Lepidodendron.
Permian sandstone fossil of the bark of a giant
fern tree called Lepidodendron growing over 300 million years
ago in carboniferous times.
It was red in colour with a rhombus shaped pattern in high relief.
The fossil was found at Corrie, Isle of Arran, probably in the
well known Corrie Shore section in which the whole of the carboniferous
succession is telescoped into about 1500 feet of strata.
