Tourism
is now the world's largest industry, and an industry this size cannot
fail to have impacts on the economies, environments or people of destination
areas. Often these impacts are positiv, e.g. creating employment,
but sometimes they are negative, e.g pollution, congestion or environmental
damage. There are 3 main impacts of tourism - economic, environmental
and socio-cultural.
It
is often the positive economic impacts that persuade governments,
companies and individuals to get involved in developing tourism
as it has the potential to generate income and secure employment.
However,
by encouraging tourists into an area you will often create adverse
environmental effects. Indeed, the negative impacts of tourism development
can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which it depends.

The
development of tourist attractions can cause damage to the environment.
