A
lot of money has also been spent upgrading Aviemore and the centre,
in particular, has seen many improvements - including new shop fronts,
new paving and new street furniture - such as signposting and street
lighting. So, as well as making the area more attractive to visitors,
it also provides a nicer living environment for locals. Not only that,
but revenue created from tourism has been used to renovate some of
the empty properties within the area, ensuring adequate affordable
housing for purchase for those who live and work here.
The
tourist benefits are not just restricted to the well-known towns
such as Aviemore, however. Small local communities, such as Laggan,
have benefited as tourism has helped to secure their future. Not
only has it helped maintain services such as village shops but tourism
has also helped in the re-emergence of old occupations, such as
glen roadsmen, occupations that had all but disappeared from the
Highlands.
