The
s50 agreement covers the Cairngorm ski area on the Northern slopes
of Cairngorm and covers 598 hectares. The VMP is also a legally binding
agreement under Natural Heritage legislation.
There are a number of key policies enshrined within the VMP to protect
the European sites e.g. skiing visitors can exit the Ptarmigan station
in suitable snow conditions but are confined to the ski area. There
is an annual monitoring scheme to provide input into decisions on
the adequacy of management in protecting the European sites. Most
importantly, the closed system in operation prevents non skiing
visitors from leaving the Ptarmigan station throughout the year.
There
have been a number of
critics of the closed system claiming that the system is discriminatory
and that damage will be minimal if visitors remain on paths. Opponents
have advocated a range of other options such as ranger- guided walks
from the Ptarmigan building and that time limited access should
be permitted.

The
closed system where visitors must pass through a retail area has
come in for some criticism.
