Despite the controversy, the New Look was appropriate for the post-war era. People wanted to experience something new after the austerity of the war years. Dior's feminine look suited the government's agenda of women returning to the role of housewife and mother after working in farms and factories during the war effort. Such was the success of the look that House of Dior was swamped with orders. This success continued throughout the 1950s and Dior held a client list which included Rita Hayworth, Margot Fonteyn, Ava Gardner, Marlene Dietrich and Princess Margaret.

On Dior's death in 1957, he was replaced by his assistant, Yves Saint Laurent. The first Dior collection produced by Saint Laurent was a huge success. However this working relationship was brought to an end when Saint Laurent was conscripted into the army in 1960. After demobilisation, he opened his own couture house. House of Dior replaced him with Marc Bohan, who remained in post until 1996, when he was replaced by British designer, John Galliano." />
