Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was a pupil of Andrea del Verrocchio (c.1435-88) in Florence. As a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, inventor, writer, musician and natural scientist, Leonardo da Vinci is regarded as being the versatile artist of the Renaissance period. His stress on the intellectual aspects of art changed the reputation of the artist from that of a skilled craftsman to that of a creative thinker.
His approach to his work was analytical and like Masaccio, he was less concerned with the surface appearance of his work and more with the underlying construction of his subjects. Later in life, he adopted an increasingly methodical scientific approach, which included anatomical studies and drawings of dissections." />
