Greenock Greenock suffered from terrible sanitary conditions throughout almost the whole of the 19th century - overcrowding, overpopulation, poor housing all helped make Greenock a most unhealthy place. There had been an outbreak of cholera in 1832 and again in 1847. Typhus broke out on several occasions. An outbreak of smallpox in 1873 obviously led to the publication of this pamphlet - 'PROPOSAL TO STAMP OUT SMALL-POX AND OTHER CONTAGIOUS DISEASES' by the late Professor Sir James Y Simpson, Bart. It was issued by the Sanitary Committee in Greenock in March, 1876. Dr James Wallace, the town's medical officer was mainly responsible for helping to establish better conditions in the area at the end of the 19th century. Dundee In these minutes dated early October 1870, the monthly report from the Medical Officer of Health is given. The major concerns were the rising death rate from small-pox and the provision of extra hospital accommodation. Death toll figures are given and agreement is made to set up temporary accommodation for small-pox patients in the Infirmary grounds. By the end of the 19th century, a vaccine against smallpox had been developed and there were no serious epidemics of smallpox in Dundee, but it was still considered a threat. The opening of a special hospital for smallpox in 1894 was a great help. Many of the cases of smallpox reported were believed to have been influenza or chickenpox at first, with symptoms of illness and eruptions of rashes and papules on the skin.
