David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire in 1813. As a child he worked as a piecer in a cotton mill. He trained as a medical missionary and travelled to Africa to explore the continent and spread the Christian message. He was opposed to the slave trade. Livingstone died in Africa in 1873.
