Whytock & Reid, Premier Cabinetmakers & Upholsterers

26th March, 2013

A collection of new records on Scran celebrates the history of Whytock and Reid, premier cabinet makers and upholsterers in Edinburgh for nearly 200 years. Richard Whytock's Edinburgh-based haberdashery, drapery and textiles business partnered with John Reid's Ayrshire cabinetmakers and upholstery firm in 1876 to form Whytock, Reid & Co. Over the years a distinctive Whytock and Reid style of furniture developed, with pieces that could almost pass as antiques.

The company closed in 2004, leaving behind a prestigious legacy, with five generations of the Reid family at the helm. They remain and are remembered as one of Edinburgh’s foremost furniture makers.
