NATURAL
RESOURCES- Sandstone
Permian
sandstone from Arran has been quarried for use in building. The well bedded
red aeolian sandstone is ideal for use as a building material because
it is very easily workable and cuts very nicely. Many buildings in and
around the Glasgow are built of sandstone from Arran. White sandstone
from the Cock of Arran was also once quarried for the same purpose.
 Just
how easy it is to work sandstone is well illustrated by 'Dr McCredy's
bath' - a long, deep bath carved out of sandstone on the foreshore at
Corrie around 200 years ago. Dr McCredy, a resident of Corrie, presumably
enjoyed sea-water baths - his permanent memorial on the foreshore at Corrie
fills up as the tide comes in.
