NATURAL RESOURCES- Slate

The Dalradian of northwest Arran contains a large synform which is in fact an inverted structure called the Lochranza Anticline. The core of this structure is composed of shales and sandy shales which have been metamorphosed to produce what is known as the Lochranze Slate group. These well cleaved rocks have been quarried near Lochranze for their use as roofing slate.
